Brighter looking eyes, with mineral SPF 35 right where you need it.

The skin around your eyes is where shadows, puffiness and fine lines show first, and it is the spot your morning sunscreen most often misses.

Total Eye gives the whole eye area broad spectrum SPF 35 from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, with a sheer tint that softens the look of dark circles the moment it goes on. Colorescience's Total Eye Complex of peptides and botanicals supports a smoother, firmer look over time, and the cooling tip helps the area look less puffy. It is ophthalmologist reviewed for use around the eyes, including for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes.

Who It Is For

Anyone who wants their eye area protected every day, especially if dark circles, puffiness or fine lines are what you notice first.

Not Acne Safe

What You Will See, and When

The brighter, more even look shows up right away. In Colorescience's four week study of 90 people, 95% said at least one of dark circles, puffiness, crow's feet or firmness looked better.

How to Use

Every morning, as part of your sunscreen step, whatever the weather and whether or not you go outside: dispense half a pump onto the applicator tip, dot it around both eyes, and smooth it from under the eye up to the brow, lids included, then blend with your fingertips. Put it on together with your face sunscreen, and do your eye makeup after. Reapply through the day, indoors and by a window too, because the film wears off; tie it to washing your hands and keep it in your bag.

The Science

In UV camera studies of everyday sunscreen application, people missed about 14% of the eyelid region compared with about 7% of the rest of the face, and they did not know they had missed it. The inner corner of the eye was the spot most often left bare. An eye sunscreen made to go on the lids and up to the brow closes that gap.

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are mineral filters that absorb and scatter ultraviolet light across UVB and UVA. The iron oxides that tint this formula add color correction, so shadows under the eye look softer as soon as it is on.

SPF is measured in the lab at 2 mg of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. In a study of real application, using half that amount brought the SPF down to roughly its square root, and a quarter of it brought it down to roughly its fourth root. Protection drops faster than the amount you skip, which is why the amount matters as much as the number. Reapplication matters for the same reason: the film wears off with time, touch and sweat, whatever the weather.

Questions

Where does it go in my routine? In the morning, as part of your sunscreen step: it goes on together with your face sunscreen, after moisturizer and before eye makeup.
Can it go on my eyelids?Yes. Smooth it over the whole area from under the eye to the brow, lids included, and keep it out of the eyes themselves.
I wear contact lenses. Can I use it?Yes. Colorescience has it ophthalmologist reviewed for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes.
Which shade do I choose?Pick the one closest to your skin tone: Fair, Medium, Tan or Deep. The tint is sheer and made to soften shadows, not to cover like concealer.

Why a Routine Made for You Works Better

General advice is written for everyone, so it has to assume nothing about you. It can tell you what is safe. It cannot tell you what will work for your skin.

Skin changes when it is challenged just enough, then given time to recover and adapt. That amount is different for every person, and it moves as your skin gets stronger. Ask too much and your skin spends its energy recovering instead of improving. Ask too little and nothing changes. Finding that point for you, and moving it at the right time, is where results come from.

Where that point sits depends on:

  • Your skin: its history, how it reacts, and what it is doing today
  • Your health: hormones, medications, pregnancy and any condition that changes how skin behaves
  • Your lifestyle: sleep, stress, diet, sun, exercise and climate
  • Your routine: what you use now, and what has and has not worked before
  • Your goals: what you most want to change
  • Your expectations and timeline: how soon you want to see change, and what is realistic for your skin
  • Your consistency: how much time and how many steps you will keep up with, because the best routine is the one you actually do
  • Your treatments: what you have had and what you have planned

A skin therapist weighs all of this, builds a routine you can keep, and adjusts it as your skin responds. That is why we guarantee our products when they are part of a routine designed by one of our skin therapists. If you have been reading general advice, bring your questions. We will help you sort out what applies to you and what does not.
